DOE Preparations for Yucca Likely to Delay Storage
LCG, May 24, 2002--The timetable the Department of Energy has set for storing nuclear waste at Nevada's Yucca Mountain may fall prey to a lack of necessary data, a General Accounting Office official told the Senate Energy and Natural Resource Committee Thursday.Gary Jones said obtaining increases in funding would be necessary to start storage operations in 2010 as originally planned. Data about the site's conditions and the existence of sufficient capacity will have to be obtained if the DOE is to obtain necessary licensing from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, according to Jones. The official further said the DOE should be held responsible for prior procedural and risk-assessment oversights that may result in a delay. While the DOE had planned to apply for a license from the NRC in 2003, additional information that has yet to be collected will cause the licensing application to be delayed to 2006, Jones told senators. This would likely cause the first shipments of waste to be possible only by 2014 or 2015.Republican members of the Senate outside Nevada believe that the scientific justification for Yucca Mountain is nearly conclusive. Sen. Joe Barton's (R-Tex.) spokeswoman Samantha Jordan said, "By the time we begin using Yucca Mountain as a site, the science will be more than proven as acceptable for the site." The House has voted in favor of using the site, while the slightly more divided Senate has yet to vote.
