Nigerian Energy Fears Wrath of Soccer Fans

LCG, May 28, 2002-With World Cup tournament play imminent , Nigeria has been pleading with passionate soccer fans to be patient with power failures.

NEPA, the National Electric and Power Authority of Nigeria, is sometimes known as "Never Enough Power Anywhere." The energy company has been advertising to prevent the negative repercussions of a lack of electricity during the World Cup.

One such advertisement says, "If you go on an orgy of destruction simply because there was a power failure during a favorite match you may be watching, you will not be helping matters."

Recently hundreds of enraged soccer fans damaged NEPA facilities when service was cut off during a match.

Nigeria, as the 9th most populous country and home to 130 million, has about 5,900 MW in electricity capacity, entirely from fossil fuel and hydroelectric sources.
