Texas' Comanche Peak Nuke Off Line
LCG, June 7, 2002--Unit 2 of the TXU Energy nuclear plant Comanche Peak, in Texas, is not producing for the grid today, after going off line late yesterday.According to a company spokesman, the original reason for the shutdown had been the detection of "high vibration in a main generator primary water pump shaft." However, after further examination, he said, "We now believe that it was a false reading on vibration ... We're now replacing that circuit card." He was not able to say until when the outage would last.Unit 1 of the plant remains at full power as of today, according to a U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission status report. The owner of the plant, which is in Glen Rose, TXU Energy is a unit of TXU Corp., and as of the beginning of 2002, was the largest electric retailer in the US.
