FP&L Expands Plant With Gas

LCG, June 14, 2002--An existing power plant in DeBary, Florida, will see one of two new planned gas-fired generating units go online today, to replace one of its three oil units.

The utility Florida Power & Light, part of the FPL Group, intends in the fall to bring the Sanford plant's second gas unit into operation, with another 1970's-era oil-burner to be shut down at that time. With the third oil-fired unit will remain ready to provide backup power as needed, the overall capacity of the plant will rise from 950 megawatts to 2,050 megawatts.

The plant will use combined-cycle technology, which incorporates steam turbines to capture energy released from the fossil-fuel combustion, achieving higher fuel efficiency than is possible with the gas turbines alone.
