Privatization of Two Peruvian Companies On Hold
LCG, June 20, 2002--Major political upheaval continued over the privatization of two Peruvian power companies, as President Alejandro Toledo issued a letter of apology yesterday, and suspended the sale.Negotiations between the government and local officials and civic leaders led to a decision to let the nation's high court decide the legality of the sale. Belgian firm Tractabel, which was declared the top bidder for the companies last Friday, accepted the decision.A group of mayors put their support behind a referendum on the issue, rather than consideration by the high court. Widespread protests by some fearing job cuts and higher power tariffs had led to a 30-day state of emergency being declared, but with the reading of the president's letter Wednesday, Vice President Diez Canseco said that the state of emergency would be lifted by Friday. Alejandro cancelled a trip to the United States and Nicaragua in response to the protests.
