Minnesota Utility's New Plant Operating

LCG, July 3, 2002--Rochester Public Utilities brought a set of jet turbine generators into operation last week, bringing 50 megawatts online in the Minnesota town.

The plant is located at the Cascade Creek Substation on Rochester's west side. It is expected that growth in residential and commercial demand could lead to municipal peak demand equivalent to the entire output of the new plant as well as the 216 megawatts RPU buys under contract from Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency, a cooperative.

The turbines, which are designed to run either on natural gas or diesel fuel, will provide Rochester up to 30 megawatts for its own use, as 20 megawatts has been sold under contract to Central Minnesota Municipal Power Agency. An older, 32-megawatt turbine at the same site that has been operating for 27 years was converted to be able to run on natural gas as well as diesel fuel. RPU will sell any surplus power on the open market.
