Wisconsin Public Service, Calpine Sign Agreement
LCG, July 5, 2002--Wisconsin Public Service and power developer Calpine have signed an agreement which calls for the utility to purchase Calpine's De Pere Energy Center, and receive power from a larger, proposed plant under development.WPS earlier had a power-purchase agreement which allowed it to secure output from the gas-fired 180-megawatt De Pere plant, which has been operating since 1999. In 2004, De Pere is scheduled to convert to combined-cycle operation.A ten-year contract will cover capacity and energy from the proposed 235-megawatt Sherry Energy Center, proposed for siting near Marshfield, Wisconsin. Charlie Severance, the WPS Director of Bulk Power Supply, said of the De Pere transaction, "It's good for Public Service and its customers, because we'll have a better mix of resources that will mean lower rates for our customers." WPS serves electric and natural gas customers through utility operations in Northeast and North Central Wisconsin, as well as a section of Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
