Allegheny Energy Reduces Outlays
LCG, July 8, 2002--Allegheny Energy is scaling back its power generation development activity, and will reduce its payroll by 10 percent, with most reductions to take place by the end of the year. The company, which has customers in Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia, will not construct a new plant in La Paz, Ariz., as was planned. Additionally, an 88-megawatt plant that was to be built in St. Joseph, Ind. will not proceed. Job reductions will number about 600 including early retirements. The company's chairman, Allen J. Noia, commented on the need to respond with "prudent and decisive actions" in the face of lower-than-expected wholesale energy prices, low weather-related demand, and the substantial decrease in energy trading, to which the company made substantial commitments in 2001.
