Highest Demand of the Year (So Far) Expected in California Today
LCG, July 9, 2002--The California Independent System Operator is predicting that demand across California will peak around 4:00 PM today, the highest level of demand experienced yet during 2002, while approximately 2,200 megawatts of generating capacity went off-line over a 24-hour period. The ISO-predicted peak load of 40,402 megawatts applies to the ISO's control area, which no longer includes the Sacramento Municipal Utility District. Availability of power imports are not expected to be plentiful, based on high temperatures throughout the Western states.Power consumers are asked to conserve through Thursday. Although director of the ISO's grid operations, Jim McIntosh stated "California is almost entirely dependent on power plants internal to the control area today," it appears that a Stage 1 electrical emergency can be avoided. A Stage 1 emergency occurs when the power reserve margin falls below 7 percent.
