Greece-Europe Power Links Established

LCG, July 10, 2002--High-voltage power lines allowed the flow of electric power between Greece and Italy for the first time yesterday, as the two countries' prime ministers, Costas Simitis and Silvio Berlusconi respectively, participated in a high-profile ceremony.

The connection between each nation's power grid takes the form of a 163-kilometer (102-mile) underwater cable, under construction beginning in 1997. Greece lacks land borders with other European Union countries, but will likely see an economic benefit from the ability to import and export power as needed. Seventy-five percent of the cable's cost was borne by Italy, while the remaining twenty-five percent was funded by Greece.

Greece now imports natural gas from Russia, and has signed an agreement to receive gas from Iran through a new pipeline through Turkey. The country's leaders are also interested in establishing a pipeline to Italy.
