Russia Will Continue With Iranian Nuke Project

LCG, July 29, 2002-Russia will build nuclear reactors in Iran, despite Bush administration opposition.

Russian construction of a nuclear plant near Bushehr has been delayed for years, and the Bush administration had repeatedly requested that Russia back out of its agreement to build the Gulf coast plant.

However, Prime Minister Mikhail M. Kasyanov approved plans for Iranian nuclear development last week. Long-term plans include building as many as 6 reactors at the Bushehr site and one other site. These plans contradict earlier assertions that Russian participation would end with the Bushehr plant.

Russia has an $800 million contract to build one reactor at the Bushehr site, signed in 1995, and over 1,000 Russian engineers and technicians are involved with the project.

U.S. officials fear that nuclear technology will be turned to military applications, and the new plans may stress relations between the Russian and U.S. governments.

Russia also plans to be involved in oil and gas development in Iran, including the construction of gas pipelines.
