Rapids Power Cancels 225 MW Project
LCG, August 6, 2002-Rapids Power LLC will no longer follow through with plans to construct a combined heat-and-power facility. The project, a joint endeavor with Minnesota Power and Blandin Paper Company, would have brought generating capacity to the Grand Rapids, Minnesota area, in addition to supplying a Blandin paper mill with steam.Apparently hard times in the paper and energy industries have yielded the cancellation as the most economically feasible choice.Several power projects nationwide have also been terminated or postponed recently because of unsavory market factors.Minnesota Power supplies 144,000 customers. Blandin Paper is a subsidiary of UPM-Kymmene Corporation.
