Bruce Unit Restart Expected This Month

LCG, August 16, 2002--According to Bruce Power, one of four nuclear generating units in Ontario shut down between 1995 and 1998 is likely to be brought into operation again this month.

Of two groups of units making up the Bruce generation station, Bruce A and Bruce B, only the four Bruce B units, started in 1995 through 1998, have been operating recently. Of these, the 860-megawatt Bruce 6 was taken off line in March for significant maintenance activity. The plant is located between Kincardine and Saugeen Shores, next to Lake Huron, with Toronto approximately 165 miles to the southeast.

No mention was made about which of the 825-megawatt units might be restarted. Bruce Power, which is the majority owner of the plant, is a unit of British Energy plc. Cameco Corp. has a 15 percent ownership stake. Approximately 5 percent is owned by unions whose members work at the plants, the Power Workers' Union and The Society of Energy Professionals.
