Japanese Agency Finds Evidence of Cover-up in Nuke Reports
LCG, Aug 30. 2002--A unit of Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) responsible for nuclear safety has determined that reports on nuclear reactors contain discrepancies with the actual conditions at certain plants. While General Electric International Inc., a subsidiary of General Electric Co., was hired as a subcontractor in charge of performing plant inspections, a former employee of the unit has told METI that Tokyo Electric Power Co. officials ordered that reports should be revised. The Kyodo news service obtained information from sources close to the investigation that inspections found larger numbers of cracks in a steam dryer that was part of a pressure vessel than were indicated by Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) in reports to METI.The discrepancies, which are reported to span part of the 1980's and early 1990's, have received attention from Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, who found fault with TEPCO's reporting on the inspection findings. TEPCO has acknowledged a series of 29 discrepancies based on its own inspections. A report is due on the matter in September from METI. Yomiuri Shimbun, a major daily, reports that the TEPCO chairman, Hiroshi Araki, and the president, Nobuya Minami, are both seriously considering resignation to take responsibility at the time the report is released.
