Wind Farm Possible at Montana Mine

LCG, Sep. 16, 2002--A windpower developer that previously bid unsuccessfully to supply power to Montana's NorthWestern Energy is still pursuing a project in the state, at the Golden Sunlight Mine.

The company, Northern Alternative Energy, is studying the possibility of building a 50-megawatt installation made up of about 28 turbines. A Jefferson County economic development oficial, Scott Mendenhall, has been in discussion with the developer. "This is something everyone can support, he said....We need to jump on this as a state."

By seeking the support of the Public Service Commission to provide energy to customers who do not choose an electrical provider, the company president, John Jaunich, is aiming to secure qualifying facility status for his investment. A federal production tax credit would result if the Public Service Commission agrees.
