TVA Plans Restart of Nuclear Unit
LCG, Oct. 2, 2002--An agreement for engineering services has been signed that calls for the restart of the Tennessee Valley Authority's nuclear generator Browns Ferry Unit 1 in 2007.The planned return to operation would follow restarts of Units 2 and 3 at the same nuclear complex in the 1900's. According to the president of engineering firm Becthel's global power business unit, Scott Ogilvie, "These units have been performing exceptionally well -- they are leaders in the industry, and we see that happening again with Unit 1."The units were first shut down following the 1979 Three Mile Island accident, which led to regulatory changes that could not be satisfied at the time. Unit 1 will add more than 1,250 megawatts of capacity to the grid.
