Dominion Determines South Carolina Possible Nuke Site

LCG, Oct. 4, 2002--A study conducted by Dominion Energy Inc. into possible nuclear plant sites raises the possibility that permitting will be granted for an area in South Carolina known as Savannah River Site.

Acording to Gene S. Grecheck, vice president of Dominion's Nuclear Support Services, "SRS' infrastructure is excellent." The contents of the report, which also evaluated the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory, and the Portsmouth site, in Ohio, will probably be released by the Department of Enery later this month. The agency funded the study through President Bush's push for a new nuclear power plant to be built by 2010.

Financing for a plant would be needed if approval is granted, with the cost for a nuclear plant expected to be over one billion dollars.

The Savannah River Site has been approached by an economic partnership, Aiken-Edgefield Economic Development Partnship concerning purchase of the land that might host a plant. Thus far, the owners have decided to await a decision on permitting before responding.
