Enron Seeks Monopoly Exemption for Portland Utility
LCG, Oct. 7, 2002--Bankrupt Enron Corp., which owns the utility Portland General Electric (PGE) in the state of Oregon, has sought to have the utility made exempt from decades-old Public Utility Holding Company Act legislation barring monopolies.Companies that conduct business in a single state may apply for such an exemption. A hearing will be conducted by the Securities and Exchange Commission on whether PGE meets this requirement. One area to be examined is Portland General's 20-percent ownership of the Pacific Northwest Intertie, across which power flows between Oregon and California. The agency will try to determine how much revenue PGE earns from power deliveries at the Mid-Columbia trading hub.Enron has put the utility up for sale, and a deadline for bids is set for November.
