EU to Increase Funding for Fuel Cell Research
LCG, October 10, 2002European Union members announced today their intentions to increase funding to hydrogen fuel cell research, and formed a new partnership of 17 European auto and energy companies for the purpose of investigating this technology. Hydrogen fuel cells operate by combining hydrogen gas and oxygen to form water. This reaction creates a significant amount of heat energy which can be converted to electricity. Hydrogen atoms must be separated from hydrocarbons in order to be used in the reaction. This process requires energy. Therefore, the advantage of fuel cells is that they can provide electricity for a machine, such as an automobile, without providing harmful emissions, but electricity must be produced to create the fuel first. The EU Commission neglected to put numbers to the new funding, but the 17 companies, including Royal Dutch/Shell, DaimlerChrysler, and Renault, expect to bring research spending up to the United States level. The U.S. spends three times as much on fuel cell research than all EU countries combined, while Japan spends four times as much as the EU. An EU panel will be appointed in the near future to report on fuel cell prospects by next year.
