Russia to Continue with Iran Nuke Construction

LCG, December 26, 2002Russian officials have said that they will continue with their plans to construct a nuclear reactor in Iran.

Russia intends to assist Iran in the accelerated construction of one $800 million nuclear generator in Bushehr and continues to plan future additional projects. The light water reactor will provide 1,000 megawatts of capacity. Germany began constructing the plant in Iran in 1974 but the construction site was bombed by Iraq three times during the Iran-Iraq war.

Earlier this year U.S. officials asked Russia to reconsider its nuclear projects in Iran, and recently, with the nations focus on North Koreas involvement in radioactive materials, the U.S. has reiterated its opposition to the construction.

Russias Atomic Energy Minister Alexander Rumyantsev has noted that the U.S. has not yet shown any violation of international laws regarding nuclear plant projects. Radioactive waste from the plant is to be returned to Russia for disposal, and Rumyantsev has asserted that Iran will have no access to spent fuel rods. Russian officials also insist the plant type and its fuel could not be manipulated to produce nuclear weapons.

U.S. officials, in addition to Israels National Security Council, disagree and worry that nuclear projects will help Iran develop nuclear weapons.

The plant, which will now see accelerated construction, is likely to be completed late 2003 under supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
