Reactor Company Applies for MOX Fuel Permit

LCG, February 27, 2003-Duke Energy has applied to install mixed oxide (MOX) fuel lead assemblies.

Mixed oxide fuel combines the uranium oxide normally used in reactors with roughly 5 percent plutonium oxide. European companies have used MOX fuel for over twenty years, in part to reduce weapons-grade plutonium stockpiles.

35 European reactors utilize MOX fuel, but in the United States some people are cautious about its use for safety reasons. Fission of MOX fuel, because of its plutonium content, may cause increased embrittlement of the reactor metal, and MOX fuel, until expended in the reactor, could still be used by terrorists.

Duke Energy has announced that it wants to use MOX fuel assemblies in either the McGuire or Catawba reactor starting in 2005. Four of the 193 fuel assemblies would be MOX.

Duke Energy began the regulatory process today as it sent in its preliminary application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
