UK to Close Calder Hall, World’s Oldest Nuclear Plant

LCG, March 20, 2003Calder Hall, the oldest industrial-scale nuclear plant in the world, will be shut down.

The plant, located in northwest England, will be closed because of weak electricity prices in the United Kingdom.

Operating since 1956, Calder Hall utilizes Magnox technology, an expensive and infrequently used process. Seven UK plants use this technology and comprise 5% of total British capacity.

State power company BNFL decided to close the 196-MW plant 3 years earlier than announced as overhead was simply too large. The plant will cease operations March 31.

British anti-nuclear groups have been very active in calling for the closure of nuclear plants in Britain, and many of Britains reactors are slated for closure over the next 20 years.
