Entergy Beats Market Expectations

LCG, Feb. 5, 2003--Fourth-quarter net income for Entergy Corp. as announced last week was three times the amount reported for the same period last year, supported by results in energy trading and the company's nuclear portfolio.

Operating earnings from the company's core business were 34 cents a share, whereas analysts had expected 26 cents per share. Net income was $81.7 million, with revenue at $1.88 billion. The energy trading unit contributing to the results is a joint venture with Koch Industries, Entergy-Koch. The purchase of the nuclear plant Vermont Yankee in July of last year helped earnings in the nuclear unit to rise 17%.

The company's chief executive, J. Wayne Leonard, noted that 2002 "was a year of disappointing performance in our industry, and as these results became more common and more unexpected, the crisis affected everyone... Despite all of this, Entergy maintained its strong cash position, improved its creidt quality and liquidity, and exceeded its targeted operational-earnings growth."

Entergy has a portfolio of approximately 9,000 megawatts of generating capacity either operating, under construction or under development. Entergy-Koch LP, in addition to trading, has an extensive pipeline system managed under its Gulf South Pipeline subsidiary.
