Transmission from Alberta Could Serve U.S.

LCG, Feb. 7, 2003--Surplus power generated in Alberta's oilsands region could be transmitted to western U.S. customers, based on studies undertaken by TransCanada Power LP.

The project, called the NorthernLights line, would be a direct-current line with a capacity of 2,000 megawatts. Plants serving the line would be those in the Fort McMurray area, where several companies, including Syncrude Canda, Suncor Energy and Albian Oil Sands, have operations to produce electricity and steam.

The plans currently under review would mean construction would begin in 2005, with operation of the line starting in 2008. Representatives of TransCanada and Alberta Energy Minister Murray Smith made a trip this week to Oregon and Washington, where they saw possible customers for the power that would be made available.

Although U.S. customers are seen as having significant future demand for power, as much as 50% more by 2020 than current average daily demand, Alberta's Transmission Administrator will likely be involved in making sure that Alberta's customers receive enough power to maintain reliability in the province.
