FERC OKs Big Gas Pipeline to California
LCG, April 24, 2003Energy officials gave final approval for the operation of a new pipeline expansion connecting the Rockies to California, and the addition is expected to enter service one week from today. MidAmerican Energy Holdings Company, part of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., purchased the Kern River pipeline from Williams Cos. last year for $960 million in cash and debt assumption. MidAmerican then doubled the capacity of the pipeline by completing the $1.2 billion expansion Williams Cos. had begun planning in 2000. Kern River covers 1,679 miles and already has long-term contracts on over 95 percent of its expanded capacity. The new and old pipelines will have a combined capacity of 1.73 billion cubic feet per day, up from the preexisting capacity of 835 million cubic feet per day. Kern River entered gas transportation service in 1992 and was purchased by Williams Cos. in 1996. Construction of the pipeline expansion began in August of 2002.
