Federal Regulators Settle BP Energy Allegations for $3 Million
LCG, July 22, 2003The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and BP Plc. came to an agreement over BPs alleged electricity market manipulation. In March an investigation by FERC uncovered activity between BP Energy Company and Reliant Resources that allegedly showed manipulation of Western electricity prices during the 2000/2001 energy crisis. FERC staff found that BP staff sold energy to Reliant and then repurchased it in order to influence electricity prices at the Palo Verde hub. While some people find so-called round-trip trades legitimate, BP did respond to FERCs report and noted the trades were inappropriate.According the Commission, BP will pay $3 million to United Way in California and Arizona. BP electricity sales will have to pass FERC review for the next six months. Also, energy trading records, such as reports on trades and copies of trading tapes, will be submitted to FERC.
