Dominion Reviving Maryland-based LNG Terminal

LCG, July 22, 2003--The Cove Point liquid natural gas terminal in Maryland is being brought back into operation by Dominion Resources Inc., which is also considering expanding LNG operations to serve the "interstate pipeline grid," the company announced.

The terminal was shut in 1980, when LNG prices were prohibitively low. Dominion purchased the Cove Point facility from williams Cos. for $217 million last year, and has also spent $180 million to resuscitate it. Long-term agreements with BP Plc, Royal Dutch/Shell Group and Statoil ASA of Norway, which ship LNG, have been signed.

Cove Point is equipped with berths to convert frozen natural gas, stored 270 degrees Fahrenheit below zero, back into gaseous form from two tanker ships simultaneously. The LNG expands in volume by 600 times. The facility can release 1 billion cubic feet of gas daily, and can keep what amounts to 5 billion cubic feet of gas on-site. Plans are under consideration to add another tank, which would be able to hold LNG equivalent to 2.5 billion cubic feet of gas.
