More Detailed Set of Events Before Blackout Released
LCG, Sept. 26, 2003--A series of small line failures occurred in Ohio during Aug. 14th, the day of the record-setting blackout, according to a timeline produced by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO).Among the lines that tripped was Findlay, in the service territory of AEP, which tripped at 3:51 p.m., and in half a second, closed again. Such an event in isolation is normal on any given day, but the report found a greater number of such events than would be expected. The small problems were seen in four utilities' control areas, with over 50 experienced by FirstEnergy and AEP, and others in the territories of Cinergy Corp. and Dayton Power & Light Co.The timeline and report, which were sent to Ohio Gov. Bob Taft, provide a fuller picture than was available based on any single utility's data.
