Repairs Continue at Vermont Nuclear Plant
LCG, Sept. 30, 2003--The Vermont Yankee nuclear plant, which has been shut down for two days for repairs to a leaking valve, will not restart yet, due to a ruptured seal on a recirculation pump. The valve was repaired on Sunday, but when the seal on the recirculation pump was found to have sprung a leak of about three and a half gallons per minute, the restart had to be postponed. The license for the nuclear plant, in Monteplier, Vt., sets two and a half gallons per minute as the maximum allowed flow from the seal, which is one of two of its kind connected to the pump.Arnie Gundersen, a former nuclear engineer, told the Associated Press that "It's just another thing that happens in an old plant." The plant spokesman Robert williams said that the leak was entirely within the containment area of the reactor, and that no radioactive material had been released to the outside. The Vermont Yankee plant is currently owned by Entergy Nuclear, which has applied for approval from the Public Service Board to increase the output capacity of the plant to 650 megawatts, from the current 540 megawatts.
