Washington State Storm Cuts Power

LCG, Oct. 29, 2003--Power was cut to over 100,000 electricity customers in Washington state, due to a storm that packed high winds on Tuesday.

The area affected included the Snohomish County Public Utility District, as well as north Seattle, and the counties of Skagit and Island. The latter counties are served by Puget Sound Energy. During the worst part of the storm, 82,000 customers lost power in Snohomish County PUD territory, and ferry travel was suspended on two routes and delayed on another.

Damage to buildings and equipment was sustained from the impact of 70 mph winds, which resulted from a cold front. Dust was a factor in a 30-vehicle accident on a state highway, although no fatalities were reported. The cold front could cause fruit still unharvested from orchards to be lower in quality, and might affect the yield from next year's harvest as well.
