1250-MW Plant Completed in Arizona
LCG, Nov. 12, 2003--The Mesquite Power plant is now capable of producing 1,250 megawatts, after having begun operations with 625 megawatts during the summer, Sempra Energy Resources announced. The plant is one of three that were completed in the Pacific Southwest this year, including the Termoelectrica de Mexicali and Elk Hills Power, outside Bakersfield, California. Donald E. Felsinger, group president of Sempra Energy Global Enterprises, said "the Completion of Mesquite Power caps a very successful year in terms of our power plant construction efforts, as we completed all three projects on time and under budget."The plant, which is made up of two blocks of combined-cycle, gas-fired units, is located approximately 40 miles west of Phoenix, in Arlington, Arizona. Before Mesquite Power was built, roughly 250 mesquite trees and 25,000 cacti were removed from the area, and kept in a nursery for the duration of construction. The trees and cacti will be replanted through March of 2004, according to the company.
