Power Being Restored in Pacific Northwest
LCG, Jan. 8, 2003--Over 150,000 power utility customers in the Pacific Northwest who lost electricity following an unusually harsh succession of winter storm are again able to turn on the lights, according to utilities in Washington and Oregon.Snow and freezing rain caused outages for 260,000 homes and businesses at the peak impact. Dorothy Bracken, a spokeswoman for Puget Sound Energy in Bellevue, Washington, told Reuters, "Our weather conditions are very good today to be able to get this restoration work completed." The utility restored power to 100,000 out of 125,000 who had lost power. The same weather that shut down airports due to slick runways inflicted damage on power lines. Last night new outages were caused in some areas even as crews made progress with previously downed lines. Portland General Electric had 30,000 outages remaining early today, down by about half of the original total.
