Strike Limits French Capacity by 6,000 Megawatts
LCG, June 19, 2003Today French workers have gone on strike and limited the countrys electricity output by 6,000 megawatts. Union officials say that they aim to shut down an additional 4,000 megawatts. The generation was shut down in both nuclear and fossil fuel sectors of energy production; cuts began Wednesday night at nuclear plants Cattenom, St. Alban, and Belleville. Workers are striking over concerns about planned pension reforms, as well as privatization in various parts of the energy industry. The French government is interested in increasing the number of years of work required before workers receive pensions.
