Plants in PJM to Be Retired by Reliant Resources

LCG, Feb. 12, 2004--A group of generating plants in the Pennsylvania-Jersey-Maryland Interconnection that were first brought into operation in the early 1970's may be either retired or mothballed, according to Reliant Resources Inc.

The amount of capacity that could be taken out of operation totals 622 megawatts, although Reliant Resources plans to obtain approval from regulators and grid managers prior to taking any action. Among the units that could be affected are the Wayne combustion turbine, which is under consideration for retirement, and the Warren, Shawnee and Blossburg units in Pennsylvania, as well as the New Jersey-based Glen Gardner, Werner and Gilbert generating units. Other than the Wayne turbine, the units are likely to be mothballed.

Marginal peaking capacity of 470 megawatts could also be retired or mothballed, if the company finds that market conditions warrant such steps.
