Kendall Square Generating Units Could Be Shut Down
LCG, Apr. 12, 2004--Two generators capable of producing a combined 284 megawatts at the Kendall Square power plant in Massachusetts may be shut down by owner Mirant Corp.Mirant spokesman Loue Friscoe said that the generators are not economically viable, due to their infrequent operation. Mirant, which is bankrupt, hopes to gain approval for shutting down the Kendall Square units from regulators. It would take the units off-line in October, but keep two jet fuel-burning generators that produce 20 megawatts each operating. Those units could produce power as well as steam for local commercial use.
