High-voltage Line Begins Operating Under Mississippi River
LCG, May 12, 2004--Entergy Louisiana, Inc., a unit of Entergy Corporation, announced today that it has begun operating a transmission line contained within a flexible sequence of pipes located 100 feet below the bed of the Mississippi River. The line was developed as a way to allow larger shipping vessels to travel the river at New Orleans more easily. The transmission line is contained within 12 sections of pipe of different diameters, each made up of fused 50-foot sections. Installation work began last August with a horizontal drilling unit that created a tunnel, using a geographical positioning system for guidance. The pipes were then pulled through the tunnel, after which the line itself was pulled through the pipes. The total length of the sections of pipe is 46,800 feet, while their total weight is 800,000 pounds. The cable, which is continuous (unspliced), weighs almost 1,000,000 pounds, and was made by J-Power Systems of Japan. During the installation work, transmission lines crossing the river and connected by transmission towers were raised to allow vessels to pass, without the need to systematically de-energize lines, as has been done regularly in the past."Our transmission engineers have written a new chapter in power industry history as they built on the company's record of supplying reliable power in a unique region both blessed and challenged by the constraints of natural boundaries and a rich but delicate ecosystem," J. Wayne Leonard, the chief executive officer of Entergy, said.
