FERC Approves Settlement - PJM Expansion Planned for this Fall

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved a contested settlement between PJM Interconnection (PJM), American Electric Power Service Corporation (AEP), the Public Service Commission of Kentucky and Kentucky industrial customers regarding the transfer of operational control of assets to PJM. At the same meeting on June 17, 2004, the FERC affirmed an administrative law judge's decision and ruled that the FERC may allow AEP to integrate into PJM.

The integration into the PJM regional transmission organization (RTO) is scheduled for October 1, 2004. PJM will then have functional control over AEP and Dayton Power and Light's transmission systems, including assets located in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. Last month, PJM integrated over 5,000 miles of transmission lines transferred by Commonwealth Edison (ComEd), becoming the world's largest grid operator.
