Growing Appetite for Renewable Energy
LCG, July 2, 2004--The demand for renewable energy supplies is growing, especially in the State of California, where the State has set a target of supplying 20 percent of its customers' energy supplies from renewable resources by 2017. Yesterday, both San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), the nation's largest municipal utility, issued solicitations to purchase renewable energy.SDG&E's goal is to accelerate California's plan and achieve the 20 percent renewables target by 2010. The increase to 20 percent is substantial, given SDG&E currently has contracts to supply about 6 percent in 2010. LADWP is seeking to acquire up to 1,320,000 megawatt-hours per year of renewable energy - or 13 percent by the end of 2010 - with continued efforts in order to meet the state goal of 20 percent in 2017.The appetite for renewables is growing across North America, as various government entities set in place regulations and financial incentives to encourage their development. Rhode Island's legislature just passed an energy bill that includes a 16 percent renewables target in 2020, and if Governor Carcieri signs the bill, Rhode Island would join at least 13 other states that have similar renewable energy supply requirements. In Canada, the Ontario Ministry of Energy recently released a Request for Proposals (RFP) for 300 megawatts of new renewable energy capacity. Ninety proponents expressed an interest and have identified approximately 4,400 megawatts of potential renewable energy capacity.
