Gulfstream Pipeline Extension in Florida to Begin Construction
LCG, July 16, 2004--Construction on the extension of the Gulfstream natural gas pipeline was initiated this week. When completed, the extension will allow the 1.1 Bcf/day pipeline access to new markets, including power plants, such as the planned expansion of Florida Power & Light's Martin Station. The 110-mile extension of mainline will extend from Polk County to Martin County and will also require construction in Hardee, Highlands, and Okeechobee Counties. The expansion is scheduled to be complete in December 2004.Gulfstream, a joint development between Williams and Duke Energy, was placed into service in May 2002 and is the first new natural gas pipeline into Florida in over 40 years. The pipeline receives gas from Mobile Bay, East Louisiana and Mississippi before crossing more than 400 miles of the Gulf of Mexico. The Martin Station expansion proposal calls for converting two combustion turbine peaking units, along with two new combustion turbines, into more efficient combined-cycle natural gas generation providing an additional 800 MW.
