FMPA Targets Fort Pierce Site for New Power Plant
LCG, July 29, 2004--The Florida Municipal Power Agency (FMPA) has selected a site west of Fort Pierce, Florida to build a 250 MW, gas-fired power plant. FPMA elected to purchase the property from the Fort Pierce Utilities Authority (FPUA). The new plant is planned to commence operations in 2008.FMPA, which is owned by 29 municipal electric companies, is expected to seek proposals from others to provide alternatives to the Fort Pierce project. According to FPUA, key benefits associated with the Fort Pierce site include access to both gas pipelines and electric transmission lines, and its close proximity to a load center. The additional capacity may also better allow for the aging, 125 MW King Plant located at Fort Pierce to be shut down.
