Texas Genco Awarded DOE Grant for Coal Plant Emissions Project

LCG, October 29, 2004--Yesterday the Department of Energy (DOE) announced the final project selected to receive a grant from Round Two of the 2002 Clean Coal Power Initiative. Texas Genco will receive $6.1 million grant in support of a $12.2 million project to reduce emissions at an existing coal plant.

The project will focus on reducing mercury emissions through the use of advanced control processes and sensor technologies to optimize mercury speciation and control at the existing Limestone Electric Generating Station. The plant will use a blend of Texas lignite and Powder River Basin (PRB) subbituminous coal.

The grant is part of President Bush's 2002 Clean Coal Power Initiative (CCPI) to invest $2 billion over 10 years to advance technologies to help meet the country's growing demand for electricity.

The DOE announced similar grants this month in support of other advanced coal technology projects. Excelsior Energy, Inc. and ConocoPhillips will receive a $38 million grant for the development of a new, 531-MW, integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) plant to be located near Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota. Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC) and Southern Power, the unregulated subsidiary of Southern Company, will receive a $235 million grant for the development of a 285-MW, advanced coal plant to be built at OUC's existing Stanton Energy Center near Orlando, Florida. Peabody Energy will receive a $19.7 million grant to demonstrate a technology to achieve ultra-low emissions at the proposed 300-MW, Mustang Energy Project located near Peabody's Lee Ranch Coal Company operations in New Mexico.
