Ontario Selects Two More Gas Projects to Bridge Supply Gap
LCG, May 31, 2005--The Ontario Ministry of Energy announced that it has selected two, natural gas-fired power projects proposed by Eastern Power to supplement Ontario's electric generating capacity. These two projects, with a combined capacity of 570 MW, are in response to the Request for Proposal (RFP) initiated by the government of Ontario in June 2004.The Province of Ontario has committed to closing 7,600 MW of coal-fired generating capacity by 2008 in order to improve air quality. As part of the commitment, the coal-fired Lakeview Generating Station, with a capacity of 1,140 MW, was shutdown last month. Ontario must rapidly develop alternative power supplies to allow for the continued closure of such a significant portion of its generating resources. The two new power projects, Greenfield North and Greenfield South Power Projects, are located in Mississauga. The design capacity of each project is 285 MW. Both projects must now complete an environmental assessment and are subject to local planning processes. In April, the Ontario Ministry of Energy selected four other proposals as part of the 2004 RFP process. With the exception of a small demand-response project, the projects selected last month are fueled by natural gas and include: a 1,005-MW, combined-cycle plant to be located near Sarnia, Ontario and be developed by Calpine and Mitsui; the 570-MW St. Clair Power Project, also located near Sarnia, to be developed by Invenergy and Stark Investments; and a 90-MW co-generation facility to be constructed by the Greater Toronto Airport Authority. Thus the combined generating capacity of the five, gas-fired projects selected in April and May totals 2,235 MW.
