FERC Approves Proposed Weaver Cove and Golden Pass LNG Terminals
LCG, July 1, 2005--The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved on June 30 two new liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals and related facilities. The Weavers Cove LNG terminal is to be constructed in Fall River, Massachusetts, and the Golden Pass LNG Terminal and Golden Pass Pipeline are to be constructed in Texas and Louisiana. The FERC also denied on June 30 an application submitted by Keyspan and Algonquin Gas Transmission to modify an existing LNG storage facility in Rhode Island into a new LNG import terminal because the proposed facility would not meet current construction and safety standards.Weavers Cove Energy and Mill River Pipeline, affiliates of Hess LNG, propose to construct the Weavers Cove terminal with a potential import capability of 800 MMcf/day, including two natural gas pipelines to connect the terminal to the Algonquin Gas Transmission system and local intrastate pipelines. The Golden Pass LNG Terminal is proposed by Golden Pass LNG Terminal and Golden Pass Pipeline, subsidiaries of ExxonMobil Corp. The facilities are to be constructed in two phases along the Port Arthur ship channel. Phase I would provide for an import capacity of up to 1 Bcf/day, and Phase II would receive up to 2 Bcf/day. The project would include over 120 miles of pipeline to connect with up to ten existing interstate and intrastate pipelines.ExxonMobil's affiliates, Vista del Sol LNG Terminal LP and Vista del Sol Pipeline LP, also received FERC approval on June 15 for their proposed Vista del Sol LNG Terminal and related pipeline facilities. The proposed Vista del Sol LNG Terminal will be located along the Gulf of Mexico near Corpus Christi, Texas and will be able to receive approximately 1.1 Bcf/day of LNG.
