In Memory of Rajat Deb: Inspiring Man of Ideas and Remarkable Silicon Valley Archetype

By Anjuli Deb -- With deep sadness and profound appreciation, we share the passing of LCG's founder, Dr. Rajat K. Deb. He was our president and one of the first entrepreneurs in the computer revolution. He was also our friend, our teacher and mentor, and for a few of us, our father and grandfather.

Oklo and Centrus Sign Letter of Intent to Purchase Nuclear Fuel for Aurora Powerhouse Deployment in Southern Ohio

LCG, June 19, 2026--Oklo Inc. and Centrus Energy Corp. announced yesterday a Letter of Intent under which Centrus agrees to supply enough domestic high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) to power up to five of Oklo's Aurora nuclear powerhouses for multiple years, with deliveries to Oklo scheduled to begin in 2029. Centrus will supply HALEU from its American Centrifuge Plant in Pike County, Ohio to support Oklo’s planned 1.2 GW power campus in the region

Progress Energy May Develop Nuclear Plants in Both Florida and the Carolinas

LCG, November 2, 2005--Progress Energy yesterday announced that it plans to seek licenses to build up to four nuclear reactors at two locations, with one site in Florida and another in the Carolinas. The company plans to submit applications for both sites to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) by 2008. Construction would begin two years later, with operations commencing as early as 2015.

Progress Energy previously notified the NRC on August 29, 2005 that its plans may result in its submittal of one combined construction and operating license (COL) for a new nuclear power plant in Florida. At that time, Progress Energy also notified the NRC that it expects to select a potential site and reactor vendor by the end of 2005.

The announcement that Progress Energy plans to submit a second license highlights the renewed efforts to develop nuclear reactors in the Southeast. Last week, Duke Power announced that it is preparing a combined COL application to construct two nuclear reactors. Southern Nuclear Operating Company announced in August that it has selected its Vogtle Nuclear Station in Georgia for consideration as a site for new nuclear units. SCANA, the parent company of South Carolina Electric and Gas Co., and Santee Cooper announced in August that they are considering extending an existing nuclear generation joint ownership agreement so that they can study construction of a new nuclear generation facility. (The two companies currently co-own the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station near Jenkinsville, South Carolina.)

The NuStart Energy Development, LLC, a consortium founded last year to support the development of new nuclear power, announced in September that its two finalist sites for the development of new nuclear reactors are Grand Gulf Nuclear Station (owned by Entergy Nuclear) in Port Gibson, Mississippi and Bellefonte Nuclear Plant (owned by the Tennessee Valley Authority) near Scottsboro, Alabama. NuStart plans to prepare applications to the NRC for combined COL. One application will be for a GE Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor (ESBWR) and one application will be for a Westinghouse Advanced Passive 1000 (AP1000) reactor.

Both the GE and Westinghouse designs incorporate passive safety features that rely upon natural forces, such as gravity, in order to reduce reliance on active, mechanical systems, like pumps and valves. The Westinghouse AP1000 reactors are each able to generate 1,100 MW of electricity. According to Westinghouse, the AP1000 is scheduled to receive Design Certification in December 2005.

GE submitted its Design Certification application to the NRC for its 1,500-MW, ESBWR design in August and anticipates the Final Design Approval toward the end of 2006, with the Design Certification received immediately thereafter.

Progress Energy is a participant in NuStart Energy Development, LLC, a consortium founded in 2004 to support the development of new nuclear power stations. Other participants include Exelon, Entergy, Southern Company, Constellation, Duke Energy, the Tennessee Valley Authority, Florida Power & Light, EDF International, and the two reactor vendors, GE and Westinghouse Electric.
