Sierra Pacific Resources Plans New Coal-fired Generation in Nevada

LCG, January 10, 2006--Sierra Pacific Resources announced yesterday that it plans to develop and install two 750-MW, coal-fired power generating units in eastern Nevada. The overall plan includes a new, 250-mile long transmission line that would connect Nevada's northern and southern regions. The combined project cost for the two units and the transmission line is estimated to exceed $3 billion.

The new units, to be located in White Pine County, would use traditional, pulverized coal technology, together with state-of-the-art emission control technologies. The first unit is planned to commence service in 2011, with operation of the second unit to follow within three years. A subsequent expansion of the energy complex is planned that would consist of two, 500-MW units that incorporate coal gasification technology. If completed, the total electric generating capacity of the station would be approximately 2,500 MW.

Sierra Pacific Resources' principal subsidiaries are Nevada Power Company, the electric utility serving much of southern Nevada, and Sierra Pacific Power Company, which serves most of northern Nevada, together with customers in California in the vicinity of Lake Tahoe.
