Bruce Power Files with CNSC to Build New Nuclear Reactors

LCG, August 18, 2006--The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) yesterday received an application from Bruce Power to prepare a site for the potential construction of new reactors at its existing nuclear site near Kincardine in southwestern Ontario. Potentially four, 1,000-MW reactors may be installed.

The development of an environmental assessment (EA) is a key hurdle to clear prior to the licensing of a new nuclear reactor. Bruce Power expects that the EA may require three years to complete.

Bruce Power is Canada's only private nuclear generating company, and it currently operates the Bruce A and Bruce B nuclear power stations. The two stations include six active units and two, 750-MW units that are in the process of being refurbished. The two units that are being refurbished originally commenced operations in 1977 and were shut down in 1995 and 1997 by the prior owner, Ontario Power Generation. Bruce Power anticipates the units will return to service in 2009. With the reactivation of the two units, more than 6,200 MW of electric generating capacity be available from Bruce A and B - before adding any capacity from new reactors.
