NRC Optimistic About Restarting TVA's Browns Ferry Nuclear Reactor
LCG, November 2, 2006--The chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) stated Tuesday that restarting Unit 1 at Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant in May of next year appears quite "doable." The reactivation of Unit 1 will add 1,200 MW of capacity to the generating fleet of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA).
TVA is the owner and operator of the plant, which is located beside Wheeler Reservoir on the Tennessee River, near Athens, Alabama. There are three General Electric boiling water reactors at the plant. Unit 1 commenced commercial operation on August 1, 1974, but safety concerns led to its closure in 1985. Units 2 and 3 were also closed for a period but returned to operations in the late 1990s and are currently generating power.
TVA plans to restart Unit 1 in May 2007 following plant upgrades that are estimated to cost $1.8 billion.
The TVA Board voted to return Browns Ferry Unit 1 to service in May 2002.
