Quebec and Ontario Commit to Build New Electric Transmission Interconnection
LCG, November 15, 2006--Ontario's Ministry of Energy announced yesterday an agreement was executed between Hydro-Qu?bec Trans?nergie and Hydro One Networks for the construction of a new 1,250 MW Qu?bec-Ontario interconnection that will provide Ontario greater access to Quebec's power supplies.
The initial phase of the project is scheduled to commence operations on May 1, 2009 and is designed to provide a capacity of 900 MW. The second phase will follow about a year later and will increase the capacity to 1,250 MW. The project will be located in the Outaouais region of Quebec and extend through the Cumberland area on the east side of Ottawa in Ontario.
Of particular interest to Ontario, which is currently working to phase out coal plants and reduce emissions, is the ability to import power generated from clean, non-carbon emitting hydroelectric facilities. With the new interconnect, Quebec will be able to generate more hydroelectric power within its domain for use within Canada and assist in reducing Canada's carbon footprint.
In August of last year, Ontario's Ministry of Energy announced its joint proposal with Hydro-Qu?bec and SNC-Lavalin to develop hydroelectric generation facilities that would add 2,824 MW of capacity on the Lower Churchill River in Labrador. Ontario is also exploring greater access to power supplies in northern Manitoba.
