Nevada Solar One Project Delivers Power to Grid

LCG, June 8, 2007--Acciona Solar Power announced yesterday that its Nevada Solar One project has commenced operations and is delivering power to the grid. All of the power from the 64-MW plant will be purchased by Nevada Power Company and Sierra Pacific Power Company under long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs).

In contrast to a photovoltaic energy conversion process that creates electricity via a chemical reaction between sunlight and a thin film, the Nevada Solar One project uses large-scale, parabolic trough technology to focus the energy from the sun to heat liquid, typically oil, which in turn is used to heat water to create steam. The steam powers a traditional turbine to generate power. The facility is now one of the largest solar power plants in the world.

Mirrors for the facility cover 400 acres in the Eldorado Valley. The project was constructed over a 16-month period and cost over $250 million. Commercial operations are scheduled to commence within a week.
