Exelon Power Moves Forward with New Power Plant in Texas
LCG, July 20, 2007--Exelon Power, a unit of Exelon Corporation, yesterday took a key step towards the construction of a 640-MW, gas-fired power plant in Texas by filing an air permit request with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).
The new, combined-cycle electric generating facility is proposed to be built at Exelon's Mountain Creek Generating Station in Dallas. The existing station consists of five fossil units with a capacity of 893 MW.
Exelon announced plans last September that it was exploring the addition of nuclear electric generating capacity in Texas. More recently, Exelon announced late last month that it had selected two potential sites near the Texas Gulf Coast for constructing a new reactor. The two sites are a 1,250-acre tract in Matagorda County near Palacios, and an 11,500 acre site south of Victoria. Exelon stated that a decision to construct the nuclear plant has not been made; however, Exelon plans to file an application with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) next year.
